Furniture Behind Story :Originality of Furniture Design from ZHU Xiaojie
朱小杰——石匠、木匠、钳工，最后成为能做自己喜欢的家具的工匠。一九八九年留洋澳大利亚悉尼。一九九四年回国组建设计工作室。现任：中国家具设计专业委员会副主任、上海家具设计专业委员会主任、澳珀家具设计师。
澳珀工作室是一幢由朱小杰设计的办公楼，约5000多平方米。由展示厅、设计室及样品制作车间组成。主要从事家具设计，解决工艺流程，完成样品制作。让工厂可以按规范的图纸进行批量生产。
澳珀工作室拥有各种技能的员工30多人，其中有平面设计师、家具设计师、室内设计师、建筑设计师、制图工程师及摄影师。最重要的一点是，它拥有一批具有传统手艺的木工师傅、木雕师傅、油漆师傅、缝纫师傅和机械工程师，是中国唯一具备这样系统的设计工作室。
Formerly worked as a stonemason, carpenter and locksmith before becoming a craftsman doing what he loves. In 1989, he studied in Australia and started a career in interior design. In 1994, he returned to China and established his own design studio. Today he is the chief designer of OPAL Furniture Company, the Deputy Director of the China Furniture Design Committee and Director of the Shanghai Furniture Design Committee.
The Opal studio is located in an office building (approximately 5000 square meters) designed by XiaoJie. It has an exhibition hall, offices, sample workshops, etc. An important feature of the design area is that everything can be accomplished here—samples to mass production.
Opal studio employs more than 30 people in creative areas: graphic designers, engineers, photographers, architects and interior designers as well as traditional craftsmen, sewers and painters. Of course, there is also machinery.
清水椅(Cheering Chair)
这把椅子是十多年前设计的，现在我还是很喜欢。那是第一次把明式家具理解后，用自己的一些手法进行了表达。传统的木作工艺，使这把椅子很简洁。因为几百年过去了，人们的生活有了更多的要求，所以将椅子的尺寸做了调整。全是榫卯的传统工艺。座面采用了北欧的一种纸绳编织。后来还用了工厂做沙发剩余的牛皮余料的拼缝坐垫。也许保留了传统的一些特色在市场上还一直受欢迎的。
This chair was designed more than ten years ago, and I still love it love it very much. That was the first attempt to interpret a chair in my own understanding of Ming-Style furniture. Tenon is the traditional technique to give the structure strength. The seat is made of paper rope from north Europe. We developed the surface by using the scrap leather from sofa making but then wanted to keep a traditional element.
软椅(Soft Chair)
用实木做的椅子，虽然尺寸把握得很好，坐上去也舒适，但望着它时，总还缺少一点温柔，所以就想做一把软椅。屁股是软软的，把你的腰却撑托着很省力，又有实木的感觉。于是把靠背角度最好的雕塑椅与座面最简洁的花卷沙发混合了一下，将靠背与座位都做了调整，这把软椅就诞生了。 再给软椅配一个定制的边角几，组一个圆型的组合沙发，会适合小型细雅的会客场所的陈设。
The real wood chair is great for its size and comfort. But I wanted an alternative that would include the best features of a wood chair yet is gentle and soft. The shape of the Soft Chair is constructed of solid wood that curves to fit your body. I combined elements from two other favorite products: the back from the Sculpture Chair and the seat from Hanamaki Sofas.
With the custom-made Basin Tea Table, the Soft Chairs can be combined to form lounge furniture and is also suitable for exclusive meeting rooms.
飞翔桌(Flying Sky Table)
这张桌子是给软椅组合配套设计的，有不同的高度，像直升机一样可以升降，可以当茶几，接待客人。升一点可以与朋友围着桌子喝茶聊天，最高时那就是餐桌，适合在大都市这种寸土寸金的生活环境。不仅是功能，因为可以在限定的范围内，任意调节高度以适应不同身高的需求。
三条腿采用直升机的螺旋桨的造型，寓意着可以自由升降。每只脚在制作中都会有一块零料，于是在桌面上的那个可以插鲜花的花瓶就出来了。它的造型不是特意地去设计，而是自然的，这个自然是利用了零料的自然的造型。
This table is designed to match the Soft Chair. With its three legs the table can be adjusted to different heights. It is like a helicopter taking off and landing. At a lower height it can be used as a tea table. At its normal height the table is perfect for having dinner on it.
Rather than see the extra piece from each leg as scrap in production, a vase for flowers was created. Because of its adjustability, The Flying Sky Table is particularly suitable for small apartments.
